Apple Pay on London Tube Promises to Accelerate Contactless Transit Payment Adoption

Today (June 8), Apple announced at its developer’s conference that the London Underground would add Apple Pay, Apple’s contactless payment system, to the contactless methods Transport for London already allows. In its 2013-2014 fiscal year, the London Underground carried a record 1.26 billion passengers, a third more than it did a decade earlier.

In her recent EAPJ Thought Leader Interview, former New York City Transit CIO and MetroCard implementation leader Atefeh Riazi observed “The biggest opportunity is for transit companies to accept other cards and modes of payment for use on subways and buses, and to completely get out of ticketing business”.
